Why Golf is such a positive sport for young people
Golf offers something increasingly rare for children and teenagers:
* Time outdoors, away from screens, in a natural environment
* A sport that develops focus, patience, and emotional control
* An individual pathway where progress is personal, not physical
* A strong emphasis on respect, honesty, and self-discipline
It’s a game that supports both mental wellbeing and physical health, while teaching life skills that extend well beyond sport.
We offer affordable, accessible junior membership options, making it easy for families to introduce children to the game.

What age can my child start junior golf at Fortwilliam?
Junior golf at Fortwilliam is open to children from around 8 years old. No previous golfing experience is required. Younger juniors are introduced to the game through fun, relaxed sessions that focus on enjoyment, basic skills, and confidence.
Does my child need their own golf clubs to start?
No. Beginners do not need their own clubs to attend initial junior sessions. The Pro Shop can advise on suitable starter equipment once your child shows interest and begins progressing. Many families prefer to wait before purchasing clubs.
What should my child bring to a junior golf session?
For their first few sessions, juniors should bring:
* Comfortable clothing suitable for the weather
* Trainers or golf shoes if available
* A waterproof jacket on wet days
* A drink and a positive attitude
Golf clubs can be provided for beginners, and there is no requirement for full golf attire at introductory sessions.
Do parents need to stay during junior sessions?
Parents are very welcome to stay, particularly for younger juniors or those attending for the first time. As children become more confident, many parents choose to drop off and return at the end of the session. Coaches and volunteers will always be present.
Is junior golf safe and supervised?
Yes. Junior golf sessions at Fortwilliam are delivered in a safe, supervised environment, with safeguarding procedures in place. Coaching sessions are led by qualified professionals or by experienced club members, ensuring juniors are looked after at all times.
Does my child have to play in competitions?
No. Competition is optional. Some juniors simply enjoy coaching and social golf, while others choose to progress into competitions and teams when they feel ready. There is no pressure to compete - juniors progress at their own pace.
What happens if my child really enjoys golf and wants to progress?
Fortwilliam offers a clear, supportive pathway from beginner sessions through to junior handicaps, competitions, and eventually student or young adult membership. The aim is to make golf a sport juniors can enjoy for life, whether socially or competitively.
How do I get my child started?
